About CitraBlue St. Augustine Grass

CitraBlue St. Augustine grass plugs were developed by the University of Florida. CitraBlue® St. Augustine is known for its deep blue-green color and disease resistance. Grass Plug Coverage

Each SodPods® grass plug is approximately 3 inches by 3 inches. A 16-pack grass plug tray can cover up to 32 square feet when spaced 18 inches apart. For faster coverage, reduce the spacing between plugs.

How to Plant CitraBlue Grass Plugs

SodPods® make planting grass plugs easy and convenient. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Dig Holes: Use a shovel or the SodPods® Power Planter grass plug planting tool to dig holes for the plugs, spacing them 6-18 inches apart.

  2. Insert Plugs: Insert a grass plug into each hole and press firmly into the soil. Ensure the plugs are upright, with the grass blades level with the ground.

  3. Water: Water frequently for the first two weeks after installation to keep the soil moist several inches deep. Adjust the frequency as needed based on weather conditions. Once new growth appears, reduce watering to 1-2 times weekly.

For best results, we recommend using NutriPod®—a specialized lawn fertilizer designed for SodPods® to help the grass plugs grow up to two times faster. Apply NutriPod® to the soil by dropping one pod into each planting hole before inserting the grass plugs. This provides essential nutrients for the plugs, ensuring healthy and robust grass growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are grass plugs?

Grass plugs are small sections of mature grass with an established root system, providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional sod. They ensure quick establishment, developing into a lush, dense, and uniform lawn in a shorter period, making them an excellent option for many homeowners.

How many grass plugs do you need?

Determine the number of grass plugs you need by measuring the area you plan to cover and calculate the square footage. Then, determine the spacing between plugs, which is recommended to be 6-18 inches apart. Each 16-pack of SodPods® grass plugs can cover approximately 32 square feet. Use this to estimate the number of plugs you need, adjusting based on your preferred spacing to ensure you have enough plugs for complete coverage. You can also use the SodPods® calculator here.

Where does CitraBlue grass grow best?

CitraBlue® St. Augustinegrass grows best in warm, humid climates and is particularly well-suited for the southeastern United States, including Florida and the Gulf Coast. It performs well in full sun and partial shade, making it a versatile option for lawns with varying light conditions.

Sodpods were healthy, but Citrablue is an extremely slow spreading St Augustine. I should have went with Provista as it is rated to spread much faster and is next best for disease resistance. I will be very old before this Citrablue finally spreads. I'm sure it's fine if you put it down as pallets, but pods will take forever to fill in as the stollens are very slow moving. If I hadn't bought a bunch of them I would have thought it was me, but no.. it's the Citrablue is slow as a turtle to spread in all parts of my yard.

Hi Gpa, Thank you for your feedback and for choosing SodPods. We're glad to hear the plugs arrived healthy and appreciate you sharing your experience with CitraBlue.

CitraBlue is known for its excellent color, shade tolerance, and disease resistance, but like all St. Augustine varieties, its spread rate can vary significantly depending on growing conditions such as sunlight, soil quality, watering, fertilization, and planting spacing. While some homeowners see quicker fill-in, others may experience a slower establishment period, especially when starting from plugs.

We understand that filling in a lawn with plugs requires patience, and we appreciate your perspective. If you'd like, our team would be happy to discuss your growing conditions and provide recommendations that may help encourage faster spread and establishment. Thank you again for your review and support.

Bought and planted in September. They had about 8 weeks before cold set in for dormancy. I would say a little less than half survived. Might have better luck with spring planting but it doesn't do well with fall planting.

All my sod plugs survived, just not the pods.

Unfortunately, they weren’t as nice as my last SodPod order. The first batch I ordered came in good soil and have been fantastic. This batch, ordered just a week or so later, were in some very sandy soil and not in the best health. About half of them haven’t taken root and have died.

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your feedback—we’re sorry to hear about your recent experience. A member of our team will be reaching out shortly to assist you and make this right.
