With the Centipede grass plugs and SodPods® Power Planter bundle, a healthy, dense lawn is within reach. Whether you're starting from scratch, repairing damaged areas, or simply upgrading your grass, SodPods® grass plugs emerge as a convenient solution to transform your outdoor space.

The Centipede grass plugs are recommended for homeowners looking for a low-maintenance lawn, due to its slow vertical growth rate, which translates to less mowing. Pair them with the SodPods® Power Planter, a grass plug auger that makes planting fast and easy, creating uniform holes that conveniently fit the SodPods®.

Effortless Planting: The SodPods® Power Planter tool effortlessly attaches to most cordless drills. It measures 3 inches wide and 12 inches long, well-suited for our 3-inch by 3-inch grass plugs. For optimal performance, use the tool on slightly moist soil to create a favorable planting surface.

Durable and Reliable: Crafted from sturdy materials, the sod plug tool is designed to endure tough digging, ensuring years of reliable use.

About Centipede Grass

Centipede grass is known for its transformative qualities—turning lackluster outdoor spaces into lush, healthy landscapes with its striking light to medium green color and fine to medium texture.

This warm-season grass boasts an excellent heat tolerance, growing most actively during the warmer months from late spring through early summer. Known for having the slowest growth rate than other warm-season grasses, Centipede grass demands less maintenance, translating to reduced mowing frequency and fewer fertilizer applications. It grows from runners or stolons, gradually covering the ground with dense, light green foliage, contributing to a healthy, resilient lawn.

Grass Plug Coverage

Each SodPods® grass plug is approximately 3 inches by 3 inches. When spaced 18 inches apart, a 16-pack grass plug tray can cover up to 32 square feet. Reduce the spacing between plugs for faster coverage. Use the SodPods® calculator to determine how many grass plugs you need.

How to Plant Centipede Grass Plugs with SodPods® Power Planter

SodPods® make planting grass plugs easy and convenient. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Dig Holes: Use a shovel or the SodPods® Power Planter sod plug tool to dig holes for the plugs, spacing them 6-18 inches apart.

  2. Insert Plugs: Insert a grass plug into each hole and press firmly into the soil. Ensure the plugs are upright, with the grass blades level with the ground.

  3. Water: Water frequently for the first two weeks after installation to keep the soil moist several inches deep. Adjust the frequency as needed based on weather conditions. Once new growth appears, reduce watering to 1-2 times weekly.

For best results, we recommend using NutriPod®—a specialized lawn fertilizer designed for SodPods® to help the grass plugs grow up to two times faster. Apply NutriPod® to the soil by dropping one pod into each planting hole before inserting the grass plugs. This provides essential nutrients for the plugs, ensuring healthy and robust grass growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Centipede grass look like?

Centipede grass is characterized by its light to medium green color and fine to medium texture, creating a lush, carpet-like appearance once established. Its blades are relatively short and have rounded tips with a soft feel underfoot.

How close should you plant grass plugs?

When planting grass plugs, it's recommended to space them 6-18 inches apart. This spacing allows the plugs to establish and spread, eventually filling in the gaps to create a uniform lawn. Proper spacing also ensures that each plug receives adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients for healthy growth.

How often should you mow Centipede grass?

Due to its slower growth rate compared to other warm-season grasses, Centipede grass requires less frequent mowing. It's generally recommended to maintain Centipede grass at a height of 1.5 to 2 inches to maintain density and promote healthy growth. It's important not to remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing to avoid stressing the grass.
